Rumor site AppleInsider is reporting that Monday may be the day for iPhone owners to receive the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store. The store, already available for iPod touch units (shipping today), was announced for iPhone units as well. iPhone and iPod touch share similar hardware and software configurations, and Apple has maintained that the update will ship by the end of the month.
The update, version 1.1.1, will make several more minor changes and bug fixes, including improvements to the calculator, international keyboard support, and enable the Home button to access iPod content quickly via a touble-tap of the home button. The update will be required to access the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, attempts to use the software on earlier software versions will be blocked. In addition, some have noted that the modem firmware will also be updated, which may undo SIM unlocks.
Furthermore, others have noted that the iPod touch is not capable of “jailbreaking”, a process which is necessary to install third-party software onto the device. It is possible that this upcoming iPhone update may block third party software from being installed on the device.
