Intel Chief Executive Officer Paul Ortellini has confirmed during the Barclay’s Capital Global Technology Conference that the promised Intel Atom chips for smartphones in the Medfield platform were being delayed to address issues with various bugs and as a result, would not be available in smartphones until the second half of 2011 from the original first half 2011 target. Intel has also confirmed that tablets using Oak Trail platform Intel Atom chips were still on track for a first half 2011 release running Android, Windows 7 and MeeGo.
Intel has historically struggled with mobile platform development due to its lack of experience in the sector, with its goal of using Atom chips in its mobile platforms being hampered by manufacturer preference for more power-efficient ARM chipsets and the increased power and size requirements for Atom leaving the chips relegated to netbooks/desktops.
