“In an interview earlier this year during its HP/Palm Think Beyond media event, Jon Rubenstein admitted that Palm lost an entire product cycle in development time as a consequence of putting itself up for sale and being subsequently purchased by HP. As a result, the Pre 2 ended up as a quiet launch on Verizon Wireless while first generation webOS devices were left to rot after previously being promised updates to webOS 2.0, severely damaging customer perception.”

Wrong again… Jon Rubenstein never understood that the market was always looking for an alternative iOS that was much cheaper. WebOS could’ve been the true competition to the iPad and the iPhone, but the price always turned interest down. He failed on PALM when lauching the Pre, and he failed again the second time when launching the Touchpad.

The sudden demand for Touchpads after the fire sale was proof that the market was very interested in webOS, but it was not ready to pay premium fees for a product that wasn’t established yet. A 1 month promotion lauch with Pres for $50 in 2010 or touchpads for $200 would’ve put a large number of webOS devices on people’s hand in order to be able to awaken interest from developers to consider making apps for them.

Amazon read it perfectly lauching the kindle fire. They will be #2 very soon.
