Google Launches GOOG 411 Voice Local Search

Google today launched an experimental version of Google Voice Local Search (GOOG-411 for short). The new service is the most ambitious directory assistance directive to-date from the company. Simply calling 800-GOOG-411 (800-466-4411), will provide you with virtually every conceivable directory assistance option.

Google stresses that this is a Google Labs product, and as such is highly experimental. The service may not be available in all areas at all times, and may suffer from capacity issues while in an active state of development.

While automated, the system takes advantage of Google’s considerable yet untapped efforts in voice recognition. However, unlike other Free 411 services, GOOG-411 will actually connect the call at no charge. Also, the service gives you the option to forward a text message to your cell phone with the address and telephone number.
