In a new Google + post earlier this afternoon Google’s Alex Wiesen has announced that MMS support in Google Voice has been expanded to more North American carriers including AT&T following limited integration with Sprint and T-Mobile. This update follows the integration of core Voice functionality into Google Hangouts within the past couple of weeks. With this development, Google is one step closer to turning Hangouts into a fully featured and self-contained communication app that only needs mobile data access to feature full VoIP and SMS/MMS functionality.
However, the integration does have issues at the moment, as initial testing by myself for PhoneNews.com shows that the messages are still not being parsed properly through either Hangouts or through the Voice phone number when sending and receiving MMS to/from multiple carriers. Despite this, the MMS issues should be sorted within the next couple of days. Notably, the only US carrier not participating in the expansion of Voice MMS support is Verizon, and Google is actively courting more North American carriers to participate in the availability of Voice MMS interchange support.
