Skype competitor Fring, developers of the Fring VOIP application have announced its own outbound calling service with the new version of Fring for Android in FringOut, which was launched last month for Symbian as a pilot program. The FringOut service prices outgoing calls to landlines and mobile network calls as low as $.01 cents per minute, though the most expensive rate is a stunning 31.3 cents per minute to Alaska. Unlike Skype on Android (the Skype Mobile trademark is exclusive to Verizon) Fring on Android will allow calls over 3G/4G networks as well as Wi-Fi.
It seems that fring is missing the dialpad functionality while on a call (or operator error on my part).
This seems to be the biggest issue for me using fring on a windows mobile device.
I wonder if they implemented this in the android version.
This is one of those last-mile issues that we’re seeing on a lot of VoIP applications. Like we mentioned in our primer on VoIP on Monday, it’s all very new and these type of issues are going to show up.
Gmail calling, for example, also has a broken dialpad while in a call.
