Sprint MVNO FreedomPop has announced after months of promises to current users that it has officially rolled out LTE access with a brand new MiFi unit in the tri-band 5580 currently sold by Sprint. FreedomPop is also offering customers the opportunity to trade in existing WiMax hardware for credit in exchange for the new LTE modem, with customers paying the difference. In related news, FreedomPop has also confirmed long-standing plans to offer free mobile service within the next 6-8 weeks and a Labor Day launch target.
Initial plans call for launching the free telephony service with the free tier consisting of 200 voice minutes over VoIP with unlimited SMS and 500MB of free monthly access while allowing for additional monthly rates and launching the HTC EVO 4G along with the Samsung Galaxy S II and III to round out the launch lineup for the VoIP-based phone service. The company has also announced its first customer milestone in that it now counts 100,000 paid users since officially launching last Summer after months in private beta.
