FreedomPop, once a Sprint-exclusive MVNO that touted its free service model with secondhand refurbished equipment, has now graduated to global GSM with the announcement that it will launch service in the U.K. this Summer, with a further expansion to Europe planned for later this year.
FreedomPop previously announced last year that it would expand to Europe with a targeted launch in Continental Europe planned for earlier this year, but the company has not commented on its once-planned launch in Belgium meant for the beginning of the year with carrier KPN.
Like the service offered in the U.S., the free service tier covers 200 minutes of calls, 200 text messages and 200 MB of data and will launch initially as a SIM-only service, with devices being offered later in the year along with the planned European service expansion and the slate of low-cost monthly add-ons. FreedomPop has already signed more agreements with six additional mobile carriers across nine European countries, and the UK service also includes free international calls to over 60 countries.
The company is also launching a new international roaming service called Jetsetter later this year, which will be a free SIM allowing 100 MB of data roaming in the UK, Spain and France, with future expansion to more than 20 countries. The JetSetter Global SIM will work on all unlocked GSM phones with plans that will start at $10 monthly. FreedomPop also has yet to elaborate on previously confirmed plans to launch service with a US GSM carrier sometime this year.
