T-Mobile has confirmed that the Fender and 3.5mm versions of the myTouch 3G will be updated to Android 2.2, nee Froyo beginning on Wednesday and continuing through February 1st.
The carrier had previously confirmed multiple times throughout last year, that the myTouch 3G, built by HTC, and its related variants would receive Android 2.2, with the original 2.5 mm variant receiving its update last month.
Building on a stock version of Android 2.2, the Android Froyo update for the myTouch 3G is feature complete and add T-Mobile’s Faves Gallery, Microsoft Exchange push email support and updated Google applications.
If finally released, the update may be the last official Froyo upgrade from any Android handset manufacturer. It has been one of the longest Android update delays that we are aware of. At multiple occasions, HTC and T-Mobile had planned to not offer the Android 2.2 upgrade for the myTouch 3G, but reversed that decision after consumer outcry.
The myTouch 3G was T-Mobile’s flagship smartphone for most of last year. Lacking an iPhone, T-Mobile released multiple variants, initially featuring a 2.5 mm headset jack. That model/variant was then replaced with a 3.5 mm headset jack, and a special edition Fender myTouch 3G was released. The phone was on the first first to tout Android as a formidable music-playing rival to Apple’s iPhone, which has built-in iPod functionality, and integration with Apple’s leading iTunes software.
T-Mobile has already updated the 2.5 mm variant of the myTouch 3G to Android 2.2.
