On the next meeting of 12th June, the FCC were to consider auctioning off 25 megahertz of unused wireless spectrum for the possible use of offering free, porn-filtered Internet access.
FCC was quick to announce the free Internet plan, but the latest development is that the chairman of FCC, Kevin Martin has put it on hold, saying that there were some concerns raised by wireless carriers which they wish to look into. The main one being the interference of airwaves with the wireless spectrum which they acquired in another FCC auction in 2006. It was also said that the delay is to give the FCC’s four commissioners more time to consider the proposal and the auction is still likely to go forward once the rules and regulations are set up in August if the proposal is picked up again in July.
With most of the well established carriers already buying a fair share in the recent FCC auction, it is yet to be seen who will be bidding in this auction. Another main concern which is still lingering is regarding the proposal which requires filtration of objectionable content.
