Today Eye-Fi has announced “Direct Mode”, a new update coming later this year to the current X2 memory card lineup that allows wireless transfer of a camera’s photos to a supported smartphone or tablet via the Eye-Fi Mobile companion app for iOS and Android. Eye-Fi’s existing lineup begins with the Connect X2, featuring 4GB of memory along with Wi-Fi radio for $49.99 and currently allows wireless transfer of photos from a camera to a desktop or laptop computer via wireless network.
Setting up the Eye-Fi  is a matter of replacing the SD card in your camera with the Eye-Fi  and tweaking settings via the included software. The system can be customized to send files to a specific computer as well as sharing on various social media and photo sharing websites. Eye-Fi will be demonstrating the Direct Mode functionality during CES this week.
