Microsoft plans to send prices for Windows 8 soaring at the end of the month. Retailer Newegg is having a final closeout sale at Microsoft’s teaser price-point, and is bringing the price down to below Microsoft’s own digital download price for Windows 8 Professional upgrade.
The item is $69.99, but a $40 mail-in rebate for a prepaid credit card drops the price down to $29.99. Shipping is free, and the item is eligible for free 2-day shipping for ShopRunner members.
This is an upgrade version, and requires an existing installation of Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 to install. At $29.99, it is eligible for the free Windows Media Center upgrade key, but it is unlikely to arrive in time to take advantage of that offer. Microsoft has indicated that the free Media Center promotion keys will expire on January 31.
You’ll also have to lock in your order quickly – the offer expires at midnight pacific time tonight.
