Amazon.com is offering Windows 8 Pro Upgrade for $54.99. A $25 promotional credit (good for any purchase on Amazon.com) drops the net cost to $29.99. Shipping is free.
This is the lowest price we’ve seen for Windows 8 Pro, beating even Microsoft.com’s digital download version (which is $39.99 through the end of the year). This version is the full, retail boxed upgrade copy.
However, as we have covered in past articles, all Windows 8 retail discs require a previous version of Windows. Windows 8 System Builder media is available, but typically not sold in retail distribution. Microsoft has copied Apple’s lead in only selling Windows to consumers who previously have purchased Windows.
Apple, in response, appears to be unwilling to ship Boot Camp support for Windows 8.
While this version does not include the Media Center Pro Pack, Microsoft is offering a free product key to any email address which unlocks the feature, through the end of the year.
Amazon Prime members will also find that a no-rush free shipping option will net you $3 in TV and Movie credit, if you chose it.
