While Google Maps for Android is poised to release an Offline Maps version, there’s one problem with it: What if you didn’t download the maps for an area in advance?
Unlike Ovi Maps and traditional GPS apps, Google has yet to offer an option that will give you comprehensive map data for a region, sitting on your device. This is because Google depends on you connecting to the web, to download new ad data (you did know that’s how they intend to pay for all this… right?).
CoPilot Live is one of the handful of native GPS apps that were released in spite of Google Maps Navigation. And, they have slashed prices for a limited time on their Android apps. The USA-only version is $4.99.
While these offers may be commonplace on iOS, they are much more rare on Android, due to the smaller supply of autonomous GPS apps. At $5, it can easily provide GPS tracking in a pinch, even if your 3G network is unavailable. The real issue is having enough storage, all of CoPilot’s USA maps check in at around 1.5 GB.
These apps can also be used on many Android non-phone devices with Bluetooth, and a GPS receiver. Click read more for the QR code to jump directly to the Android Market from your phone.
But, that thing sucks! I got it when I had a Verizon Droid and the routes were not even close to being useful. Now every time I install it and download the maps, that take forever (slowest servers in the world) it works for a few weeks then returns an error that my order number(whatever) is wrong and won’t let me back in.
They continue to use their own maps in the US, and they suck too!
I’ll tell you what, I’ll make a print your own money market app…it’ll take um more than 15 minutes to figure out that they ave been ripped!
