Woot’s Moofi clearance section is currently offering refurbished HP TouchPads at their best prices yet, with the highly sought-after 32GB version going for $194.99 and three different shipping options, ranging from $5 for standard shipping, $8 for Two-Day or $11 for overnight shipping. The HP TouchPad was previously meant to be HP’s long-awaited entry into the tablet market when it was announced to an eager crowd last Spring, but the span from first announcement to actual release meant that it would be overshadowed by the Apple iPad and its successor models as well as the increasing Android tablet market.
Events within HP would prove to be the tablet’s ultimate undoing as the TouchPad along with other webOS hardware was discontinued last Summer at the hands of former disgraced CEO Leo Apotheker, in an attempt to fashion HP into IBM-alike software and services company, with the result of having all of the inventory priced to sell. As a result, what was a slow selling competitor to Android and the iPad became one of the most sought after tech products of the year despite its limitations and the tepid reception of its operating system.
As a result of the fire sale and subsequent activity afterwards, the TouchPad has enjoyed a bit of a revival thanks to the Android developer community continually developing new Android ROMs for deployment in use on many units, helped by the recent discovery and subsequent release of an internal Qualcomm test build of Android used for hardware testing that was subsequently released to developers as source in order to ease development.
With the release of the build, developers have been able to port multiple versions of Android to the device, including the latest version of Ice Cream Sandwich while simultaneously allowing dual-booting support for webOS, should users be interested in maintaining that side of the operating system. The deal lasts for 7 days or until supplies are exhausted, whichever comes first. As an owner of a TouchPad, I can wholeheartedly recommend purchasing one, as the specs for the price still have yet to be beaten by many manufacturers, including the no-brand Chinese ODMs.
