Samsung has announced the forthcoming launch of the first handset to combine both LTE and CDMA access in the SCH-r900. The handset will launch on MetroPCS’ forthcoming LTE network, with Las Vegas being selected as the first market for commercial launch later in the second half of the year.
Related to the above, MetroPCS will henceforth shift from further investment in its CDMA network and instead increase investment in LTE infrastructure for all of its markets going forward. Samsung will be the exclusive provider for the Las Vegas LTE network, while deploying LTE equipment from infrastructure provider and Samsung competitor Ericsson in all other MetroPCS markets.
In an interesting note, MetroPCS has also confirmed that it does not directly manage its current EVDO infrastructure, instead relying on leased access from other providers to provide its current slate of data access.
