Sony Ericsson appears to be moving to support user-installable firmware updates in all future phones. Sony Ericsson posted, then pulled, an update program for the K700i and Z1010…
The update program checks the SIM card to verify the carrier for the phone, then installs the carrier-customized update for the phone. The system works with the DSS-25 Sync Station Cradle. Also, you must be running Windows 98 or higher with Internet Explorer to use the service (it runs as an ActiveX program).
As CDMA carriers move to over-the-air firmware updates, it’s nice to see GSM carriers also providing an end-user option beyond shipping a phone off to a repair center.
