Speaking to UK portal Trusted Reviews, David Proulx, BlackBerry’s Senior Director of BBM Business Development has confirmed that its cross-platform BlackBerry Messenger app currently available on Android and iOS will not be launching on Windows Phone anytime soon, owing to the perception of a lack of traction, in the eyes of the similarly beleaguered Canadian company.
“It is entirely market driven, our initial launch on iOS and Android was a function of the prevalence of those platforms. As other platforms emerge, whichever they may be, we will execute on those platforms as well. It is not a statement of intent, and it’s not a strategic or religious thing, it’s just a function of when does it make sense and when is it something that consumers demand in sufficient numbers to make it worth our while and worth their while.”
While BlackBerry may perceive Windows Phone as a weak platform, the platform has been steadily increasing in prominence, with the latest updates contributing to a steady release of high-powered Windows Phone flagships such as the 1520 and forthcoming 929 along with other high-profile app releases such as Instagram, despite suffering from a dearth of app developers, even compared to BlackBerry.
