RIM Announces BlackBerry Software Enhancements

By Elijah Nicolas on January 25, 2008

RIM_logo Research In Motion announced on Tuesday a series of software updates along with future plans for their BlackBerry devices.  These updates will enhance messaging and collaboration, provide simpler management, offer enhanced security and expand application development support.  RIM is projecting that this update will benefit all their users across the board from IT groups, to software developers which will enable various organizations to increase mobility, productivity and return on investment.

With the smartphone business rapidly expanding and eating up a good share of the mobile handset market, these updates are poised to further RIM’s dominance in the corporate level.  Highlighting one of the most sought after features, RIM’s integration of ‘Documents To Go by DataViz’ will enable customers to edit Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint and Excel files directly on their BlackBerry Device.  Although Excel file support is expected later in the year, Word and PowerPoint files will be supported in conjunction with the release of BlackBerry device software v4.5.  E-mails will now be able to be viewed in HTML and rich text formats allowing a seamless reading experience without the need of reformatting.

Another neat application is BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager which allows users to install and manage their BlackBerry smartphones from any web browser instead installing multiple instances of the BlackBerry desktop software.  You can download Web Desktop Manager free at: www.blackberry.com/go/webdesktop.

This year is set to be a big year for RIM introducing newer handsets not only for their stable corporate base but as well expanding their offering for those on the consumer level.  For details on all the other software enhancements, head over to RIM’s Official Press Release.
