AT&T reps are warning customers who purchase the Samsung Focus today to not install microSD cards into the included slot after receiving an employee memo instructing employees to do the same. AT&T is also telling reps to hold off until Microsoft releases an update to address the issue. The memo goes on to detail an operating system level bug where the card is intermittently recognized and will cause issues with reliability. In Windows Phone 7, microSD expansion slots (if available) are treated as another fixed disk, which means that sudden removal will cause memory address and device reliability issues.
In an interesting twist, AT&T initially denied to Paul Thurrott that there were no issues with microSD expansion slots on the Focus and stated that adding another card was completely supported, while Microsoft confirmed such issues and suggested that users not add additional storage via the slot. The AT&T memo confirms Microsoft’s earlier statement and has caused the carrier to backtrack on its support statement.
