AT&T and Qualcomm have jointly announced that the carrier has closed the preliminary purchase of Qualcomm’s former 700MHz spectrum holdings used previously for its MediaFLO mobile television network.
The purchase is pending regulatory approval with AT&T planning to use the spectrum as the downlink frequency in its forthcoming LTE network launch.
The spectrum purchased extends to 12MHz in the D and E blocks covering 70 million people in the top five U.S. markets of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, L.A. and San Francisco as well as Dallas/Ft.Worth while an additional 6MHz in the D block covers 230 million people across the rest of the country, totaling 300 million people.
The purchase of the spectrum follows Qualcomm’s previous announcement that the company would offer rebates on service owing to its intentions to shut down the mobile broadcasting service in March of next year.
