AT&T recently filed paperwork with the FCC to seek permission to purchase yet another block of AWS spectrum for future use on its LTE network.
The spectrum in question is owned by cable service operator Cable One and consists of AWS-1 spectrum covering 20MHz of AWS-1 A Block spectrum in 119 counties across 24 Cellular Market Areas in various states across the country. If the transaction is approved, AT&T will own a total of 63MHz to 153MHz of spectrum, including 20MHz to 50MHz of AWS-1 spectrum, in the markets involved in the transaction.
This would give AT&T yet more spectrum to ensure LTE coverage in areas where the service has yet to see significant expansion as well as pad out existing coverage in the AWS-1 band. The FCC has laid out the timelines for anyone to file opposition to the transaction.
