AT&T has announced the forthcoming launch of the Sony Xperia Ion for June 24th for $99.99 after new 2 year agreement.
The phone features a customized build of Android 2.3 Gingerbread with select features backported from Ice Cream Sandwich, a 4.6 inch touch display at 720p resolution, LTE support, 12.0 megapixel Exmor R rear main camera with 1080p video capture and LED flash, microSDHC expansion slot, Wi-Fi N radio, Bluetooth and a 720p front-facing camera.
Pricing for the phone and taking the high-end specifications into account indicates that AT&T is pushing the phone as another low-priced high-end smartphone in order to draw in new postpaid customers, much in the same way as the $99.99 new customer pricing for the previously launched Nokia Lumia 900.
While the Xperia Ion is also launching with a customized build of Android Gingerbread with select features backported from Android Ice Cream Sandwich, the manufacturer still plans to update the device not long after its launch this month and is targeting the 3rd quarter of the year for rollout.
