AT&T and Sony Ericsson today have announced the forthcoming availability of the Xperia X10 Android smart device slated for Sunday August 15th. The X10 was first announced by Sony Ericsson in November of last year and approved by the FCC for AT&T in December.
The X10 is underpinned by a 1GHz Snapdragon processor running Android 1.6 while featuring Sony Ericsson’s Timescape and Mediascape applications. Timescape is a messaging application that aggregates all communication and Mediascape is a media management application.
The X10 also features a 4.0 inch F-WVGA 480 x 854 resolution scratch resistant touch display, an 8.1 megapixel camera that supports geo-tagging, face/smile detection, image stabilization, autofocus and flash along with support for 720p video recording. It also features Bluetooth with stereo audio support, GPS and Wi-Fi radio. AT&T will be offering the X10 for $149.99 after new 2 year agreement and rebates, while Sony will be offering a $20 discount to those that order via SonyStyle retail locations at $129.99 after the same terms.
Why android 1.6? I hope it will upgrade to 2.2. Otherwise what is the point of buying this phone?
The presence of Android 1.6 is due to the heavy customization of the home screen, as well as Sony Ericsson’s replacement applications.
This isn’t the first time Android 2.0 was a hurdle for these customizations, keep in mind, the Motorola CLIQ and Devour remain at Android 1.6 as well. Motorola hasn’t even committed to Android 2.1 for the Devour as of yet.
