Apple has released iOS 4.1 via iTunes after first announcing the update during its keynote address last week. Key features of the update include performance fixes for the iPhone 3GS along with Game Center support, HDR image capture, HD video upload over Wi-Fi, and support for TV show rentals.
As recently reported within the last few minutes, 4.1 also includes support for FaceTime calls between iPhone 4 and the new generation iPod Touch, including the necessary support for email address entry to initiate a FaceTime session in lieu of the current phone number/SMS notification scheme in current use. The update is compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, as well as the 2G/3G/4G iPod Touch.
