Apple Clarifies, iPhone Still Lacks Video Out

Several web sites have reported on Apple’s addition of Component & Composite AV Cables to the Apple Store online. These cables tie into the release of Apple’s new generation of iPods, which require a cable to be connected to the iPod’s dock connector port. Previous generation iPods uses a video-out port on the iPod’s dock.

Last week, the new Apple Comonent AV Cable and Apple Composite AV Cables listed support for the third generation iPod nano, iPod classic, and iPod touch, as well as iPhone. This supported the rumor that iPhone had video-out capability since its release, and was waiting for Apple to enable it via software update. This was also fueled by the inclusion of a USB charger, bringing some to conclude that special hardware was necessary inside the cables to deliver the functionality. Apple has maintained that iPhone lacks video-out capacity.

This week however, Apple has updated their product pages for both cables, removing iPhone as a supported product. This is consistent with Apple’s official statements that iPhone lacks video out, and that no external cable can enable such functionality. The USB cable on the video connectors is intended for charging only, the charger included is a standard iPod USB Charger.
