Internal T-Mobile documentation has surfaced confirming major changes to the carrier’s device unlocking policy, which are designed to make it much easier for customers that travel abroad to take advantage of cheaper local rates for phone calls and data.
Beginning on Thursday, eligible postpaid and FlexPay customers will be able to acquire the lock code for their device in 5 weeks (40 days) instead of having to wait for three months (90 days) from start of service.
Prepaid customers will also be able request their unlock code after two months (60 days) instead the previous 90 day requirement, provided the account carries at least a $10 balance or has registered an account refill in the past 30 days.
Lastly, former T-Mobile customers that have cancelled an account can also request an unlock code, provided the account was in good standing with no past due payments and was active for 40 days or more before cancellation. However, if the cancelled account carries a past due balance, the amount will need to be paid before requesting and receiving the unlock code.
