This week Cingular discontinued their last CDPD data network. This data network was one of the first in the nation, operating on the AT&T Wireless TDMA network. Many readers will probably recall such ancient phones as the Ericsson R289LX which used the network (under the PocketNet brand), and paved the way for deployments of more advanced technologies such as CSD on CDMA and GPRS on GSM in the United States. Cingular noted that almost all of their customers have migrated over to Cingular’s GPRS/EDGE network when the network was planned to be shut down.
