As you probably know, we were the first site to create a process to allow the PPC-6600 to tether over Bluetooth with a Mac. And now, we’re the first site to figure out how to get it to work with Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger).
When we were testing Tiger, Apple had offered two ways to configure a serial port, the old way and the new way. The old way was to use the Bluetooth Serial Utility and the new way was to use the Serial Utility in Bluetooth System Preferences.
Unfortunately, System Preferences lacks a key ability: the binding of a serial port to a Bluetooth profile. This is necessary to force the Mac to see the PPC-6600 as a phone/modem. What we didn’t know while testing Tiger was Apple planned to kill Bluetooth Serial Utility from the install entirely. If we had known, we would have voiced our objections before the release.
The good news is, Bluetooth Serial Utility from Panther (10.3) works in Tiger (10.4). A link to the utility is at the bottom of the article.
To make a long story short, follow the directions in the Sprint Phones Section and install the Bluetooth Serial Utility from below if you do not have it (users upgrading will continue to). We will be working with Apple to correct this in a future update to Tiger.
