The iPhone Dev Team has updated the redsn0w jailbreak tool to version 0.8, which now allows for full jailbreaking and stable SIM unlocking on the recently released iPhone 3GS.
The competitor purplera1n jailbreak/unlock method is still too unstable and unwieldy for general use as tested and reported by many users, which is why most waited for the Dev-Team to update their tools. The decision to release updated redSn0w tools for the iPhone 3GS ahead of the release of OS 3.1 reflects the newfound competitive spirit that has lead to improved unlock/jaibreak tools for the enthusiast.
