While others are speculating, we’re confirming. One of the primary goals of Sprint Nextel will be to deploy WiMAX. WiMAX will serve in a complimentary role to CDMA, offering fixed wireless internet access in high-broadband speeds, leaving CDMA (1x EV, and eventually 3x) for lower-broadband speeds. Interactions between the two will mostly be conducted through WiFi.
From the limited plans we’re willing to disclose, Sprint will utilize Nextel’s MMDS spectrum to target the vast areas of the nation that are not covered by broadband. In initial deployments, Sprint Nextel will not try to compete with existing broadband options (unless there is overlap or Sprint Nextel can give a clear advantage is speed or quality of service).
