Google Announces Enhanced GMail for iPhone and Android

Google has announced a raft of improvements to GMail access for iPhone and Android users that take advantage of the native web browsers on each respective platform.

The first and biggest improvement is email caching on the device via database storage on iPhone or Gears databases on Android in order to ease email access in areas with intermittent cellular coverage or no data access whatsoever.

In addition to the above, the improved GMail experience also allows for composition and email reading while offline, with polling done automatically once a network connection is acquired.

The rest of the improvements concern CSS and HTML5 integration for animations, lists, and other aspects of site rendering. The new mobile GMail service can be accessed on Mobile Safari or Android by visiting gmail.com.
