Reports have surfaced that Nokia has immediately discontinued sales and support of the Nokia N810 WiMax Edition. When prompted for a response, Nokia’s PR department responded that the discontinuation was a normal procedure for old Nokia devices.
The real reasoning behind the discontinuation may be an issue of branding moreso than any real indicator of the success of WiMax in the US, as the device is prominently branded with the now defunct XOHM brand of WiMax service which was folded into Clearwire late last year and rebranded Clear.
With the request that all unsold Nokia N810 WiMax models be sent back to Nokia, it’s very likely that they will be repackaged and recertified to operate on the newly device agnostic Clear service, expected to officially launch this week in Portland during CES with the capability to recognize any compatible WiMax device as the former XOHM service once touted.
I was looking forward to Clearwire/Sprint carrying this, hope something better is in the pipeline
