Sprint today certified Apple’s QuickTime and Xserve G5 systems as capable of properly deliver 3GPP streaming video to Sprint TV-supported phones.
Sprint is the first U.S. 3G carrier to not only support 3GPP, but support Apple’s 3GPP formatting and serving. Sprint joins NTT DoCoMo as a supporter of Apple’s 3GPP initiatives.
This is good news for both Sprint, Sprint customers, and Apple. Sprint will now be able to defer serving content to Apple’s established technology, Apple will be able to gain a foothold in the 3G market on the server-side, and Sprint customers will be able to soon have access to a much wider array of content from Sprint TV.
