FCC’s chairman Kevin Martin has announced that the agency might be holding another auction for a new spectrum. The new auction, named AWSIII, is said to sell off the 25MHz chunk of airwaves within the 2155-2180MHz range.
The winning bidder will have to provide free broadband services to 50% of the population within the time span of four years, and 95% of the population by the end of its license in respect to a “free service tier”. Currently there are no details on where this auction will take place, but the matter will be discussed further on 12th June.
The further unsold 700MHz D block from the recent spectrum is also under speculation; FCC has openly asked public’s opinion on what to do with that block of spectrum.
