The Power Matters Alliance and Alliance for Wireless Power today announced in a joint release that they will work together to make their wireless charging standards compatible. Both bodies are currently responsible for the development of wireless charging standards implemented in many devices, with the Power Matters Alliance focused on larger devices and the Alliance for Wireless Power standards used in mobile as a competitor to both the Qi/ Wireless Power Consortium standards.
In the new agreement, the PMA will adopt the A4WP’s Rezence specification for magnetic resonance in the transmitter and receiver components of chargers and devices. while thhe A4WP will adopt the PMA’s inductive charging specifications as an option for multi-mode use and both groups will work together on an API for network services management for the final merged standard, which means that less incompatibility will be encountered between devices and chargers.
This leaves the Wireless Qi standard backed by Asus, HTC, Huawei, LG Electronics, Motorola Mobility, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony as the remaining standalone wireless charging standard and may lead to further standards consolidation in the future and less incompatible devices.
