Customers in Germany have been reporting, via MacNotes.de (German), their unlocking experiences after purchasing the iPhone from T-Mobile Retail outlets.
The unlocking process (previously announced for existing German iPhones to resolve legal issues) entails the end user to purchase the phone from one of the many T-Mobile outlets who then in turn submit the iPhone’s IMEI number back to Apple. Twenty-four hours after the purchase, Apple Servers are updated with your information and when you activate your iPhone via iTunes, you’re phone is then free to use any SIM card. The process is said to take less than a few seconds and is rather hassle free.
The surprise comes from the fact that it is via iTunes that these German iPhones are unlocked. We know now that iPhones can be unlocked at anytime by Apple and it is them who hold the key.
