Retailer JR.com is offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 in 8 GB trim for $169.99. Using code SPOOKY drops the price to $164.99 and includes free ground shipping.
The Galaxy Tab 2 is Samsung’s flagship entry-level tablet, with specifications similar to Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and ASUS/Google’s Nexus 7. The tablet was covered previously in our $199 price drop review, and at $165 is one of the lowest prices we’ve ever seen for the tablet. It’s also one of the lowest prices for a mainstream, Google-certified Android seven-inch tablet in the United States.
Because it is refurbished, Samsung’s 90 day refurbished warranty applies. The tablet ships with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich but will be updatable to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The tablet’s Jelly Bean upgrade is currently beginning its global rollout process, with signed OTA update leaks already becoming available online.
PhoneNews.com ranked the Nexus 7 slightly higher for its near-instant updates to the latest releases of Android, and for Kindle Fire HD’s superior Wi-Fi. However, Galaxy Tab 2 features an IR remote capability, microSD support, and a rear-facing camera.
