Microsoft Details Windows Phone Tango Limitations, Nokia Details Lumia 710/800 Updates

By Humberto Saabedra on March 8, 2012

Windows Phone 7 logoMicrosoft has detailed in-depth explanations on the limitations of the next forthcoming update for Windows Phone in Tango, which is meant for mid-range and entry-level Windows Phone smartphones such as the Nokia Lumia 610. Key among the limitations in the update is a decreased focus on multimedia and a focus on device usability with limited memory. The following features will not work on Tango phones with 256MB of RAM:

Windows Phone Marketplace – some more processor-intensive apps have memory requirements, and won’t work on phones with 256 MB of RAM, podcast subscriptions and video podcasts, Bing Local Scout, Fast app switching, SkyDrive automatic photo upload and HD video playback with certain codecs.

To address these limitations, Microsoft has also detailed steps that developers can take to work around these limitations for their applications. Windows Phone Tango is meant to be the next major update for Windows Phone and will be released in line with the release of the recently announced Nokia Lumia 610 later this year.

In related news Nokia has also detailed its latest maintenance updates for the Lumia 710 and 800. Changes for the Lumia 800 include improved battery life during both standby and voice calls; improved audio performance; altered soft key lighting behavior; and fixes for random reboots, freezes, and cut-off calls. The Lumia 710 will have improved performance when ending voice calls and should see other minor performance and usability improvements once the update is installed. Nokia has stated that the updates will roll out to Asian markets first in a staggered rollout. T-Mobile has not confirmed when the update will be available for its version of the Lumia 710.
