Sprint, UTStarcom Won’t Comment on PPC-6700 AKUs
By Christopher Price on September 30, 2006
While Alltel and Verizon versions of the UTStarcom PPC-6700 have been updated to Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.2, the Sprint version has not. PCS Intel has made several repeated requests to both Sprint and UTStarcom for comment as to if the PPC-6700 would be updated to AKU 2.2. Neither have responded.
AKU 2.2 adds considerable fixes and improvements to Windows Mobile. Specifically for the PPC-6700, it fixes memory utilization problems, improves Direct Push support, and adds new dynamic code to improve screen rotation. Sprint has recently discontinued the PPC-6700, replacing it with the Palm Treo 700wx. The Treo 700wx includes AKU 2.2.With both Sprint and UTStarcom not confirming or denying AKU 2.2 for the PPC-6700, it appears Sprint PDA owners may be forced once again to pay for new hardware to get software updates. PPC-6600 owners were assured it would be updated to support EV-DO, only to be forced to purchase the PPC-6700 to gain EV-DO.
