In addition to our previous article, Engadget Mobile’s copy of Cingular’s device roadmap also gives insight as to the next Palm devices headed to the GSM/UMTS world.
Palm appears to have demanded Engadget remove all details on such devices, but we will provide those details here. The article is no longer accessible from Engadget Mobile’s main page, but can still be found directly.
There are two upcoming Treo devices headed to Cingular. The first is a Windows Mobile Treo using UMTS. It is not clear if the device, code-named Lennon, will include HSDPA. However, the roadmap clearly states that it will include both EDGE and WiFi. Like the 700w, it will feature a 1.3 megapixel camera. The other device, code-named Nitro, will be powered with the Palm OS. Unlike Lennon however, it will not include UMTS, instead using EDGE. The device will be more similar to the Treo 700p, and features also a 1.3 megapixel camera. What appears to be developing here is a product model from Palm. Palm appears to be leveraging the Palm OS on lower-end Treos while devoting the high-end to Windows Mobile. This makes sense from a market standpoint, as higher-end users tend to prefer Windows Mobile for both multitasking and multimedia. With Lennon and Nitro, Palm appears to be ready to satisfy both ends of the smart device marketplace.
