Update: Many people are incorrectly interperting this to mean that Sprint has switched to BREW. Most people that have come to that conclusion have not completely read this article. However, we will clarify. Sprint will continue to use J2ME in devices that have uiOne installed. While that may change in the future, the only current BREW technology that will be in Sprint phones is the core of uiOne, and is not able to run any type of BREW application.
Sprint today announced that they will be using uiOne to provide a commonized user interface in future phones. uiOne is based on BREW and uses BREW UI technology at its core, similar to the commonized Verizon user interface.
However, Sprint will offer customized downloadable uiOne additions that change the look and feel of the phone’s interface, while still providing commonized support and instructions for future phones. The first phone to use uiOne is the Sanyo MM-7500.
