Sprint has gone on-record that they will push down software updates later this year enabling gpsOne in at least some of their aircards. Sprint confirmed today that the Novatel S720 and U720 would be updated to enable LBS services, and that Sprint would be rolling out LBS services for aircards later this year.
It is not known if Sprint will allow for Live GPS service to be available to any typical PC application however. gpsOne does enable Windows to tap the GPS signal at any time, potentially enabling any gpsOne aircard to double as a built-in GPS solution for anything form logistics to navigation.
However, gpsOne can also remain a closed protocol, potentially requiring each application to pay a “GPS tax” similar to GPS navigation software on Sprint phones.
