Sprint has released its second Intrinsically Safe device in the Sonim XP Strike, a rugged candybar phone that serves a specific purpose. IS-class devices are sold specifically for people that need a mobile device and frequently work in volatile environments or in environments where volatile materials are used frequently. IS devices are developed and manufactured to a specific set of specifications that ensures that the device itself will not be a flashpoint for fires or explosions, due to their component construction and alternative battery type.
The IS version of the Sonim XP Strike is only the second IS device sold by Sprint, the first being the Motorola i365IS, which was discontinued in late 2012 after being launched in 2008 only due to the discontinuation of the iDEN network. Outside of the IS construction, the XP Strike is also certified to meet IP68 standards for dust and water immersion and Military Standard 810G for salt, dust, shock, vibration, blowing rain, low pressure, humidity, transport/thermal shock and temperature extremes. It can withstand a 6.5-foot drop onto concrete and immersion for 30 minutes in up to 6.5 feet of water.

The device supports Sprint Direct Connect service outside of the specific manufacturing standards. Because of the additional expense in manufacturing Intrinsically Safe devices, the retail price of the Sonim XP Strike IS is set at $1099.99, reflecting the specialized nature of the phone compared to other devices in Sprint’s lineup. Pricing after a new 2 year agreement is set at $599.99 and is available to consumers, though the phone will most likely be sold in volume to specific enterprise and government customers.
