This morning Sprint representative Jayne Wallace confirmed the forthcoming Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk and PayLo plan changes first reported here on PhoneNews.com last week. As previously reported, pricing for the Beyond Talk plans will be going up by $10 on the low end and go down by $5 on the high end, with the new pricing set at $35/$45/$55 per month and BIS access now being included in all plans instead of relying on the separate surcharge. The new plans will go live on July 20th, one day after the launch of the Motorola Triumph.
In order to lock in the current rates, you can purchase any Beyond Talk phone and activate it from now until the 19th. It doesn’t have to be an Android phone or a BlackBerry as many people are stating online, just as long as you purchase a phone compatible with Beyond Talk plans. As long as the account with the current Beyond Talk rate plan is active, the plan will be grandfathered unless the account is allowed to lapse.
Swapping phones will also not affect the rate plan as the plans are locked in at the account level, so you could buy an LG Rumor Touch to lock in the $25 Beyond Talk rate now, then purchase the Triumph and swap phones with the same rate plan later on.
Virgin Mobile’s grandfathering clause does allow them to make changes to accounts, but the company explicitly states that customers will be given a month’s notice before any account changes go into effect in order to opt-out or continue service as was done with the recent changes to Broadband2Go service and rates.
