Qualcomm today announced that they are launching a new service called BREW Managed Service. The service is aimed at regional carriers, enabling them to easily offer BREW applications to customers. Specifically, Qualcomm is targeting smaller carriers that have struggled with offering data applications to consumers.
The managed service offers BREW application catalog hosting, as well as uploading device-variants for all BREW devices on a carrier’s network. The service can be switched transparently for carriers with a BREW server already, customers will not need to re-configure their devices.
The advantage for consumers is clear; customers on small carriers will be able to take advantage of BREW. Carrier will now be able to offer BREW services that are on-par with the national carriers. Qualcomm already has 23 smaller carriers lined up for rolling out this service on.
The advantage for Qualcomm? Locking in smaller carriers into BREW phones, making them much less likely to roll out Java-enabled counterparts.
