Fon, the architects of the FON community based Wi-Fi hotspot service have revealed another piece of hardware at Mobile World Congress, this one targeted to carriers wishing to ease the strain of bandwidth heavy activity on 3G networks such as video streaming.
The Fonera SIMPL router features two Ethernet ports and 802.11n support for high-speed data transfer over Wi-Fi with the standard complement of Fonera functionality.
The goal is to provide a WiFi network that can be accessed by any WiFi-enabled phone or device in lieu of dependence on 3G networks. The goal is for carriers to offer and issue these devices to customers in order for customers to use Wi-Fi for heavy data transfer, with an unnamed carrier already placing an order for 400,000 units.
