Details of a MetroPCS conference call intended for dealers and frontline execs have surfaced with confirmation of the regional carrier’s plans for the rest of the year, including Android handset plans.
First, the carrier has decided to cancel its planned launch of the Kyocera Zio, currently available on Sprint and Cricket.
Reasons cited for the cancellation concern its reluctance to delay the launch due to the carrier having purchased handsets with Android 1.6 before Kyocera made Android 2.1 available to carriers for handset purchase orders. Were it to launch this past October 20th, it would have been sold at $249.99 with Android 1.6 and no guarantee that it would have been updated, as it could not decide on a method to provide Android updates for the device as the Sprint version launched with 2.1 and Cricket with 1.6.
The carrier will instead launch the LG Optimus as the LG Optimus M in November for $229.99 with Android 2.2 and the previously covered Huawei Ascend for $179.99 along with 8 more handsets before the end of the year.
This is AWESOME news! Expecting stores to be PACKED!
I hope this is true since we been hearing about an android phone for metropcs for the last 6 months
[…] the Kyocera Zio, the first Android handset to land on Cricket, but they hit a snag along the way. PhoneNews.com has the info. Apparently they purchased the Zio handsets with Android 1.6, which is by now a far […]
Any idea on the exact release date on the Optimus? I have a motorola krazor from metro and i cant take it anymore. Any more information would be much apprecitated!
I heard on Friday that Metro scrapped the Zio and was going with the LG Optimus. I was glad they were scrapping the Zio for several reasons. Obviously the Android version issue being one of them. One of the Metro dealers I know actually had a dummy LG Optimus from another carrier tucked away in a drawer and they allowed me to take a look at it. Looks pretty cool, of course nothing worked as it was a dummy phone but at least I got a feel for the size, display and buttons, they didn’t have a release date either, but they said they were going on a conference call about the phone. I would suspect if they want to get on the holiday bandwagon it will be coming out soon. Who knows though really, Metro doesn’t tell their dealers anything until the last minute.
We will have them at the stores by November 22. I went to the Android training today and that’s what they told us 🙂
I heard by the end of November myself, but, as we all know, with MetroPCS what they say and what actually happens is two entirely different things…I’ll believe it when I see it…I work in a mall where there is a dealer so its nothing for me to see if its there or not on the 22nd…They will be foolish not to have this available on black friday though, they are going to miss out on the more than usual amount of money if they don’t get something exciting on their shelves…Everyone else is going to clean up on BF, we have like 8 different cell phone carriers in the mall, you can bet they are going to be cleaning up…
Yea right ! well I was having a dream and I just woke up, what’s this bye bye zio! metro I hope you can make me feel better by the time my wife gets home from the metro store. so show me the optimus m.lg
