Wireless equipment manufacturer Ericsson has announced a software
upgrade to existing GSM/EDGE networks. EDGE Evolution is designed to
deliver speeds of up to 1Mbps on the downlink as well as lower latency,
improved spectral efficiency, and lower costs.
This will bring GSM/EDGE networks closer to current CDMA 1xEVDO Rel. 0
speeds, but is meant as a companion to WCDMA/HSPA based networks to
ensure an always on best connection enviroment and for increased voice
and data capacity to ensure customers can enjoy all the services
available to them when roaming outside of their home network.
Standardized as 3GPP Release 7 last year, it is expected to launch
commercially in 2009.
